If you want a standard bath then flick away now! Natural stone baths are totally unique, exceedingly decadent and virtually always bespoke! The thing with a natural stone bath that enhances the uniqueness is actually a problem, they are heavy! Any bath is going to be heavy but one made entirely from natural stone is very heavy! This characteristic actually enhances the entire experience of having a bath in natural stone, the heat really gets into the stone bath from the top to the bottom, they are so much more relaxing than a standard bath and they feel fantastically natural.
Natural travertine baths come in a variety of colours as travertine occurs naturally in various colours and shades. It is an incredibly hard wearing material and if you have ever seen the Colosseum in Rome, you would be surprised to know that it is principally made from travertine. The various shades include yellow, white and various shades of red, beige and browns are very popular as is the classic travertine noce which is a beautiful beige colour. Travertine occurs naturally pitted with veins and when used for travertine stone wash basins, baths and stone shower trays, the travertine is filled so that you get a beautiful smooth surface with a beautiful and complex decorative effect that defines the characteristic of the natural development of the stone. Travertine is probably the most common of the stones used for customised stone bath construction as it is available throughout the world from various mines although the majority of the high quality travertine is usually sourced from Italy and Turkey. It is a relatively expensive form for construction though which partly defines the exclusivity of the end product which would almost certainly be bespoke.
Limestone, like travertine, is also a calcium carbonate derived stone and shares the same great characteristic that make it a very popular material for bespoke stone baths and custom stone sinks. It is very hard wearing and ideally suited for this purpose and is also available in a wide range of colours. Australian limestone tends be of lighter shades in creams and soft golds whereas Indian limestone tends to be available in a wider range of colours including darker browns and blues and even blacks. The Indian limestone can also include great vein patterns that occur naturally within the stone and provide a great naturally occurring patternisation within the stone. Portuguese limestone also tends to be of lighter shades, specifically creams but is also available in more vibrant beige, blues and reds. For bespoke stone showers and baths, the stunning natural pattern in limestone make it an ideal form for contemporary bespoke bathroom design.
Applestone is a naturally occurring sub form of limestone and is very limited in supply with one mine in Turkey providing the majority of the worlds supply. As a form of limestone, it shares the same characteristics but does absorb water and needs to be sealed, as all applestone bathroom products are! Applestone bathroom products are the contemporary designers choice, they have a significant degree of exclusivity due to the lack of world supply and the material is stunning. As you might have guessed, the look of applestone baths, sinks and travertine shower trays is that of apple flesh and generally occurs in similar shades. It is light and airy which makes it a suitable form for improving light in naturally dark bathrooms and wet rooms. This is definitely the choice material for designer and bespoke developments where the emphasis is on light and a fantastic form that makes the product significantly more than a functional piece!
